Heads Up: New Ways to Wear Summer Scarves
“They are perfect for bad hair days,” enthuses longtime advocate Muñoz (above), who inherited a box of Tibetan vintage and Oscar de la Renta versions from her mother many years ago and now boasts a collection of 30 of them. “They look incredibly chic and very European.” In true, flamboyant style, the Argentine 29-year-old explores their infinite possibilities by way of belts, halter tops, ascots, papillons, and pocket handkerchiefs, “but mostly,” she admits, “I like looping them into my braids.”
Despite these multifarious versatilities, it’s their romantic, whimsical charms that Gazinskaya gets wrapped up in. “There’s a kind of fantasy about them,” she muses. “You can achieve so many feminine variations on a look.” While some of her fifteen-piece collection includes billowing souvenirs brought back from Uzbekistan, the rest are classic Hermès, because she loves the texture of their silk. “I’m drawn to beautiful pieces of fabric and playing around with how to wear them.” Meanwhile, Australian model Julia Nobis takes a more straightforward approach: “I’ve never had a good head for hats, so I’ve always worn headbands,” she shrugs. “They add a hippie, rocker vibe to everything—and keep the hair out of my eyes.”
But it’s their transformative powers that got blogger and Vogue.com Contributing Photographer and Hanneli Mustaparta tied up in knots: “Scarves take a look to a different place,” she says. “I hadn’t worn my black Zara dress for while because it seemed a little serious. But with the turban, it felt more relaxed (top right). Same goes for this Zara top and Acne pants (above left). With the headscarf, everything felt so much fresher.” Perhaps it’s the perfect vacation-appropriate accessory for her trip to the Maldives next month? “I believe you should dress as yourself wherever you are,” she asserts. “It’s still hot here, so why wait for a holiday?”
